Usanze e tradizioni del Natale

Una delle tradizioni più importanti e diffuse è quella che riguarda l'albero di natale. Di solito si tratta di un abete o una pianta sempreverde che viene decorato con palline, fiocchi, nastri e luci colorate. La tradizione di decorare gli alberi a Natale risale al XIX, quando nel 1841 il principe Alberto fece sistemare un albero di Natale decorato per sua moglie, la regina Vittoria. In Italia affianco alla figura di Gesù Bambino troviamo come protagonista della festività Babbo Natale, il quale è conosciuto in Inghilterra come Father Christmas. Father Christmas è una figura attestata sin dal XV secolo e una delle prime fonti è il masque ad opera del drammaturgo Ben Jonson "Christmas, His Masque" (conosciuto anche come The Masque of Christmas) la cui prima pubblicazione risale al 1640. L’opera presenta una descrizione dettagliata della figura di Father Christmas, in origine una personificazione del Natale. Solo nel XIX secolo questa figura viene associata a Santa Claus, colui che come Babbo Natale porta i doni ai bambini la notte di Natale. Un’opera più recente ma fondamentale per la diffusione della festività natalizia in Inghilterra fu il romanzo Canto di Natale di Charles Dickens pubblicato nel 1843. In Inghilterra è nota anche la tradizione del ceppo di Natale (Yule log) secondo la quale la Vigilia di Natale il capofamiglia poneva un ceppo nel camino di casa che avrebbe poi bruciato per le dodici notti successive, ovvero fino al giorno dell’Epifania (6 gennaio). Le ceneri del ceppo venivano poi conservate poiché gli erano attribuite proprietà magiche e di protezione. Un'altra tradizione del Natale inglese è il Christmas crackers, dei tubi che una volta aperti rivelano al loro interno un regalo oppure uno scherzo.

Sono vari i piatti e i dolci tipici del Natale in Inghilterra. Il Christmas pudding un dolce tipico natalizio a base di uova, mandorle, frutta candita e spezie la cui particolarità è il fatto di avere al suo interno una monetina. La tradizione vuole che questa monetina porti fortuna a colui che la trova. I mince pie sono i dolcetti preferiti di Babbo Natale e la tradizione vuole che un piattino di questi dolci sia lasciato vicino al camino. Queste sono tortine di pasta frolla ripiena di frutta, frutta secca, spezie e liquore.

A Christian festivity was superimposed on this pagan festivity by Christians, that is the celebration for the birth of Jesus Christ. Regarding the Christmas festivities in England, there have been statements since 597.

Customs and traditions of Christmas

One of the most important and widespread traditions is concerning the Christmas tree. Usually, it is a fir or evergreen plant decorated with balls, bows, ribbons and coloured lights. The tradition of decorating trees at Christmas dates back to the 19th century when in 1841 Prince Albert had a decorated Christmas tree arranged for his wife, Queen Victoria. In Italy, together with the figure of the Child Jesus we find Santa Claus (Babbo Natale) as the main character of the feast day, who is known in England as Father Christmas. Father Christmas is a figure attested since the 15th century and one of the earliest sources is the masque by the playwright Ben Jonson "Christmas, His Masque" (also known as The Masque of Christmas) whose first publication dates back to 1640. The work shows a detailed description of the figure of Father Christmas, originally a personification of Christmas. Only in the nineteenth century this figure was associated with Santa Claus, who as the Italian Babbo Natale brings gifts to children on Christmas Eve. A more recent work but essential for the diffusion of the Christmas festivity in England was the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens published in 1843. In England, it is also known the tradition of the Christmas log (Yule log) according to which on Christmas Eve, the head of the family placed a log in the fireplace of the house, which it would burn for the following twelve nights, until the day of the Epiphany (6th of January). Then the log's ashes were preserved because magical and protective properties were attributed to it. Another English Christmas tradition is the Christmas crackers, tubes with a gift or a joke inside.
