Lyrical Ballads: why this title?

Lyrical refers to lyrics. They show the most interior and subjective feelings one’s author.

 Wordswoth is more lyrical then narrative

 Private level : to show personal feelings.

Ballad refers to the middle age ballad.

Romantic writers turn to middle age because of the irrational air of this period,

which is in contrast with the Augustan age.

Ballads were kind of narrative songs: people played them out loud.

It underlines the sense of “a Coleridge is more narrative then lyrical

 Public level: show of universal matters

In Augustan age these 2 genres were well known , but no one had never put them side by side.

By the reading of the title we can already discover

- a literary companionship even if these poets have different styles, they work side by side

- a declaration of intents manifesto. They are publishing something different, that appear bizarre (funny)

already in the title. Poet level.

Lyrical Ballads

 coincides with the Birth of Romantic writing.

Main ideas of Romanism in “Lyrical Ballads” Advertisement,

The collection of poems is prefaced by a short in which we can underline some basic elements

of the romantic movement

such as: elevation of Poetry

- : Prose, and mainly philosophical prose, was used to spread one’s ideas.

It was considered the more accessible communications medium.

In point of fact it was not such easy to get to. In reality the language used was

high toned and complicated, so that only aristocrats could read it.

It means that they start to write about common people lifestyle.

If in the past knowledge was related just to the upper class, now these Poets refer also

to a middle class reality.
