NATIONAL IMMIGRATION MUSEUM, GENOA

The MEI - National Museum of Italian Emigration, housed within the mediaeval Commandery of San Giovanni di Prè, is spread over 3 floors divided into 16 rooms where you can retrace the multiple stories of Italian migrations, from the Unification of Italy (and even before) to the contemporary.

Born from the agreement between the Ministry of Culture, the Liguria Region and the Municipality of Genoa, the exhibition, which enhances a precious archive heritage, made up of original audio and video materials specifically created for the multimedia stations, aims to tell - with an interactive and "empathetic" approach - the many aspects of the Italian migratory phenomenon from the Unification to today.

Multimedia objects because the museums of the various municipalities do not want to give them away.

Interesting to see their poor multimedia dinner as it was constituted, the reconstruction of the commenda before being aggregated with the other.

buildings, the stories of those who made it and those who didn't, the racism towards the dirty and smelly Italian isolated from everyone (like the Italian child isolated in Switzerland in class).

Precise message: in our country migrations have never stopped, from before the unification of Italy to the present day, they have increased or decreased over time, they have changed destination, but Italy has been and continues to remain a place from which one sets off towards the world (America and the American dream), where one returns and where one arrives.

Attention is paid to what happens "after the trip": the search for work and a home, learning a new language, fitting into a different society. As well as the multimedia observation of autobiographies, diaries, letters, photographs, period newspapers, documents preserved by bodies and institutions that collaborate with MEI. The museum tour ends with a reflection on internal mobility in the country - internal migration has in fact had

and still has a strong impact on the social and economic reality in Italy. 07/11/2023

PALAZZO SPINOLA

The family Spinola has been one of the most important for the history of Genoa, another is Doria. Doria and Spinola were a Ghibellina family. Other Freschi and Grimaldi were Guelfi families. The great role in the family was the one by Ambrogio Spinola, one of the most famous men of war, who worked for Spanish power. The painter Vescques, makes a beautiful patriot of him. The most famous portrait of him is the one made by Rubens. The Spinola had many portraits by Rubens and Van Dyck.

The church where the Spinola family is, is the Church of Saint Luca, with frescoes of the 17-18 century. Many cardinals like Giovanni Battista Spinola, a collector of works of art, are still kept today in the palace.

After the decadence of the republic, we have to wait for Massimialiano Spinola, senator of the kingdom of Sardinia, to stay in Genoa in the palace Spinola, the palace of the prefecture. The last members of

the front of the Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria is adorned with beautiful sculptures and intricate details. Inside, you can find a vast collection of art and historical artifacts that were once owned by the Spinola family. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, and other valuable items. The Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria has a rich history. It was originally built for Francesco Grimaldi in the late 16th century and later acquired by the Spinola family. The palace underwent renovations during the 18th century and was unfortunately damaged during World War II. The 3rd and 4th floors had to be completely reconstructed. In 1958, Franco and Paolo Spinola decided to donate their entire collection to the Italian state. This generous act allowed the public to enjoy and appreciate the remarkable artworks and historical artifacts that were once cherished by the Spinola family. The Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria is a true gem in Liguria and a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. Visitors can explore the palace and immerse themselves in the history and beauty of the Spinola family's collection.the time was very different, today you have a renovated palace during the 18-19 century. Grimaldi, the marquise, in the mid 17 century had an economic problem, he was forced to sell the palace to his brother in law, Ansaldo Pallavicino (ricorda). The palace became a possession of the Pallavicino family. The main heir of his son Nicolò Agostino, was the sister Annamaria Pallavicino married to Gerolamo Doria. The palace is now palazzo Doria. Ansaldo made the portrait of Van Dick. Another portrait for family Pallavicino is the one of Van Dyck, after being sold. The most important renovation of the palace was realised thanks to the sister of Paolo e francesco, Maddalena Doria. She was married to Nicolò Spinola, in the reason of this marriage the palace is today called Palazzo Spinola. Maddalena Doria Spinola started a complete renovation of the palace, in particular of the second floor. Maddalena liked French artists, many works from Paris, she decorated with stucco and she commissioned a

gallery of glass (an imitation of the gallery in Versailles). During the period of Giarolamo Spinola, was married to violantina Balbi, the female heir of the Balbi family, that means that many works of that family entered in the collection of Spinola. Balbi received from her father a large part of the collection of Balbi.

Giacomo Spinola, the owner of the palace, also bought artworks in the artistic market. Like the one of Antonello da Messina, signed by the artist.

The man who received the donations of the palace for the Italian state, was the sovrintendente della liguria, Pasquale Rotondi. He was a member of the central administration of the Italian State, it had an important role during the 2 war word, was 48 the superintendent for a Castle in Urbino, with many works from Brera in Milan, from Venice, from Rome. Paquale could save this work in the caste of Sasso Corvara.

Pasquale at the time was in Genoa, superintendent for liguria, and he received the keys of the palace by the marchese Spinola.

and he decided to renovate the palace in order to start a new museum. Because of the donation by Spinola Brothers, the palace had to become a museum which had to maintain the palace, like the palace was during the possession by Spinola family. With an exception, that is the 3-4 floors were completely rebuilt after the war. And the superintendent decided to create inside the palace another gallery, not the Spinola gallery, but Gallerie della Liguria. The opening of the gallery was in 1992, anniversary of Columbus discovery.

You can see many works started for the mediaeval age, and also manufactured. There are many works by Rubens, like the portrait of Giovanni Carlo Doria, which arrived in Naples and others from the branches of the Doria family. This work, after many centuries, was rediscovered in March 1940. Was destined to Hitler, who was acquiring works all around Europe, in order to construct his own museum in the city of Linz. The work returned after the war in Italy, originally was in

Palazzo Vecchio, but in 1985 returned to Naples, after 3 years to Genoa.

Ground floor: this palace has 2 facades, because it was built at the centre. All round the wall leading to the first floor, there are monumental staircases (geographic maps), a typical object collected by these noble families. You can have a famous example in Florence with maps of Cosimo de Medici.

Mezzanine first floor: In the first room there is an example of baroque Genoese decoration by Gregorio Ferrari, canvas with stories of the labours of Hercules.

First floor: Relise with the union of the Grimaldi family. With many portraits. Noble floor, decorated by the Grimaldi family, some by Lazzarone. You can find works bought by the Grimaldi and arrived here, and others bought by Spinola like Luca Giordano. A case of a work commissioned by Balbi and arrived by Spinola thanks Violantina.

Fireplace parlour: room with many artefacts from Spinola collection. A rare curious object is the Nocturlabio, a watch used during the night.

Inside there was a candle that illuminated hours. With a works commission where the Pallavicino family was the owner of the palace. There is a silver plate released by a Flemish artist, with the moment when Columbus goes for the trip to the continent.

Chapel parlour: you can admire vases from China or Japan, and some works by the manufacturer of Albisola. Piola (remember) made many copies of famous works like Van Dyck. These copies were realised in order to permit the family to sell the originals and to have a copy as a testimony of the old war world. You can see objects used during the journey, when the family was travelling they have a trunk with a service, so the priest can celebrate the mess during the trip.

Historical archives: they obtain to have inside the palace the archive of the family. You can read the books.

Little gallery (gallerietta): a space close during the 18 century, with a typical room of the time. All around the walls are display works by various branches of the family.
