Introduzione

Rosso
Red is the symbol of love and passion; but at the same time it embodies war and violence.
It’s the colour of martyrdom and cruelty.
Inglese: “The Scarlet Letter”
Inglese: “The Scarlet Letter” (Nathaniel Hawthorne).
1850 Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The Scarlet Letter is an romantic work, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
It is set in 17th-century Puritan Boston. Hester Prynne, the story tells of a young woman, who conceives a daughter through an adulterous affair, Pearl, and struggles to create a new life with her baby girl.
Throughout the book, Hawthorne explores themes of legalism, sin, love and sense of guilt.
The scarlet letter of the title is the letter “A” that was embroidered in scarlet on the dress of women who had committed adultery and because of that they were condemned to wear it all the time. Hester has embroidered the “A” with beautiful and amazing artistry and gold thread.
The scarlet letter is meant to be a symbol of shame, but instead it becomes a powerful symbol of identity to Hester.
The Puritan government is harsh so that all Puritans are always concerned about looking like conformists. This means that they hide the reality in their human flaws, frailties.
And though keeping secrets provide a short-term solution for the sinner to avoid punishment, the novel argues that repression of the individual behind a mask of secret-keeping conformity will ultimately warp and destroy a person's soul.
The protagonist, Hester, chooses not to conform to Puritan rules.
So, even though she spent her life doing what she could to help the sick and the poor, she was rejected by the villagers.
She believes that her sin won’t keep them from getting to heaven.
When Dimmesdale dies, she knows she has to move on because she can no longer conform to the Puritans' strictness. Her thinking is free from religious bounds.
Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the colour red to represent Hester's passion, need for beauty, and individuality in The Scarlet Letter.
Hester’s punishment, the scarlet letter, is representative of passion.
In this novel there are many references to the colour red. For example:
The rosebush in front of the prison Hester was held in is a symbol of a need for beauty in the suppressed Puritan society.
Pearl is called “Ruby,” “Coral,” and “Red Rose” by Governor Bellingham, the Reverends Wilson, Dimmesdale and Chillingworth because they see her dressed in a bright red and gold outfit.
When Hester speaks with Chillingworth, her eyes notice that in his red spark there is something like something is burning inside.
So, the author uses the colour red as a metaphor for vital aspects of human nature that the Romantics idealize, but the Puritans view as a mark of shame.
Introduzione colore - tesina
