Wales, also known as Cymru in the national language, lies in the south-west of the island of Great Britain. The capital of Wales is Cardiff which is one of the most important ports in the United Kingdom. It has an area of 140.3 km2. Its population is of about 345,000 people without counting the metropolitan area which makes up over a third of the total population of Wales, 1,100,000 people.
The Welsh landscape is mountainous and full of colour; there is alsoa very picturesque coastline.
An important part of Welsh cultural identity is the Welsh language (Cymraeg) which is one of Europe's oldest spoken languages and is used by around 19% of the population, most of whom live in the north west of the country. Many of the road signs in Wales are bilingual, in both English and Welsh. One of the main activities in Wales is agriculture and 80% of its land is dedicated to cultivating crops and keeping livestock. Cattle-breeding is also very important and there are many sheep which provide excellent wool. Wales is the perfect place for a walking holiday.
