The typical English dishes

In Britain there are many typical dishes which are very popular across the country. As well as the traditional English recipes, food from other countries such as India and China is also very popular even if the British like to adjust and adapt foreign food to suit their own personal taste. As a consequence they use the most unusual spices! Here are some of the nation's favourite dishes.

Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding

This dish is very special and traditonal; it is eaten on Sunday afternoons and consist of roast beef, sometimes lamb or roast chicken accompanied with assorted vegetables, themselves generally roasted or boiled and served with a gravy.

Yorkshire Pudding is very common on Sundays, it is not usually eaten as a dessert like other puddings but instead as part of the maine course as a starter of the meal. It is made from flour, eggs and milk; the batter is baked in the oven.
When the meal is over another kind of pudding with ice cream is generally served as a dessert.

Roast meats

Typical meats for roasting are joints of beef, pork, lamb or a whole chicken. More rarely duck, turkey or game are eaten. Meat is eaten with different kinds of sauces.

Fish and chips

England is very famous for its fish and chips and there are many restaurants and
“chippies” (fish and chips shops) that serve it. It is perhaps the most identifiable English dish. Fish is fried in flour batter while chips (fried potatoes) are traditionally served with salt and vinegar.

Chicken Tikka Masala

Chicken Tikka Masala is a westernised Indian dish based on baked chicken chunks cooked in a curry sauce. The sauce usually includes tomato and either cream or coconut cream and various spices.

Bubble & Squeak

Typically made from cold vegetables left over from a previous meal, often the Sunday roast. The chief ingredients are potato and cabbage, but carrots, peas, sprouts and other vegetables can be added. The chopped vegetables (and cold chopped meat) are fried in a pan together with mashed potato until the mixture is well-cooked and brown on the sides. The name is a description of the action and sound made during the cooking process.
