Life in Britain during the Second World War

In Britain during the war over 1 million children were sent away from big cities into the countryside to keep them safe from the German bombs. Government thought it was safer if children were “evacuated” to the country. Many had never been away from their families before, so it was a scary experience.
For those who stayed in the cities life was very difficult. They had to hide in bomb shelters when the sirens sounded.
There were no such thing as supermarkets in the 1940's. You had to go to different shops for different items and people had a ration book. Rations were given to everyone and included meat, bread, jam, cheese, bacon, eggs, tea, sugar and flour. Also tinned food was rationed. There wasn't much white bread during the war. It was considered a luxury and people usually ate brown bread. Everyone had a packet with 12 eggs, but it had to last 8 weeks!
Clothings was also ration. People were only allowed one new set of clothes per year! By July 1942 even sweets and chocolate were rationed.
Britain lost much during the War. Many homes were destroyed by German bombs. The economy was low, but after the victory in 1945, things improved and the country began to recover.
