Cork - Republic of Ireland

With a population of around 120 000, Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland, after the capital, Dubln. Cork has always been an important port and, during the nineteenth century, it also became the centre of a major rail network covering the southwest of Ireland. Many of these lines have since closed, however.

The city is built on the river Lee, which rises in the mountains west of Cork. For a short distance, it divides into two main channels, creating the island on which the city centre is situated.

The two parts of the river then join, and the Lee flows on to the port. Ships sail down the river the few miles that separate Cork from the open sea.

The best way to explore Cork is on foot. Cork Historic Walking Tours offers tours of the city, which will show you how it was developed over the centuries. There are a number of tours each day, every one exploring a different period in the city's history. The tours are led by qualified guides, and take place on Mondays to Fridays, from the beginning of April until the end of Semptember.

Or you might prefer to see the city from the comfort of an open-top bus, operated by a local bus company. Just buy a day ticket and you'll be free to get off one bus and get on another as many times as you like during the day.

There is plenty to see in Cork, from historic buildings to art galleries, and one of the most interesting attractions is the old prison, the Cork City Gaol. With its high walls to prevent prisoners from escaping, this magnificent building was built to look like a castle. Visit the prison to find out what life was like for the people who were held here between 1824 and 1923. Tours of the prison are avalaible in up to 13 languages.

In the 1920s a radio station opened in part of the former prison, and this building is now the home of the Radio Museum Experience. The museum has recreated the studio that was first used here in 1927. The exhibition also shows how radio has influenced our lives since then.

And Cork is a perfect city for shopping! For example, the English Market has stalls selling food from all over the world. It is over 200 years old, and the name comes from the fact that in its early days, English businesses bought food here to resell in shops in England. Cork also has plenty of stores, large and small, from major department stores to smart independent shops.
