Compute the value for the data in the following contingency table (TABLE 1).

The formula for x is:

x = (row total * column total) / grand total

where:

  • row total is the sum of the numbers in each row
  • column total is the sum of the numbers in each column
  • grand total represents the observed frequencies

331, 335, … (From table 1 you can see that grand total represents the theoretical frequencies.)

In order to determine the theoretical frequencies, first calculate the row and column totals, which are called marginal frequencies:

331 335 79 745
331 152 468 951……

The next table (TABLE 2) shows the absolute marginal frequencies and their percentage value.
