Il simple present del verbo essere è uguale per tutte le persone, le uniche eccezioni sono la 1° e la 3° singolare.
- Le forme contratte si utilizzano prevalentemente nella lingua informale.
- Il verbo to be si utilizza per:
- Indicare l’identità: I’m Laura.
- Indicare la provenienza: I’m from Italy.
- Indicare la professione: I’m a teacher.
- Indicare l’età: I’m 30 years old.

La 3° persona singolare è l’unica che si differenzia dalle altre. Dopo have/has si utilizza la parola “got”.
- Have got si utilizza in inglese britannico per indicare il possesso di qualcosa ma si utilizza solo nel tempo verbale presente.

La terza persona singolare si differenzia dalle altre. Si utilizzano gli ausiliari don’t e doesn’t nella forma negativa, e do e does nella forma interrogativa.
- To have indica possesso come “have got” ma si differenzia nella grammatica e nella sua costruzione.
- Si può utilizzare anche negli altri tempi verbali.
- È utilizzato di più nella lingua americana.
