People and the citizen life
In this work, emerges his optimism and his love for nature. His principal aim is to be acquainted with himself, and simply live to find the truth: “I went to the woods because I wish to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach and not when I came to die, discover that I hadn’t lived.”
During his stay in the woods, he observes nature, writes, receives some visits, and keeps the counts and the economy of his land, which he cultivated.
The work and its structure
The work, which assembles various genres (diary, economic essay, scientific treaty, lyric essays), is written in a colloquial language, which describes daily images. Thoreau tells the necessity to live that adventure to change from his material society, which he considered too materialistic and mechanistic (he also resumed Marx’s theory of criticism of mechanism and materialism which governs our lives), were interested in activities and money, but not in the most important things during our life. He put in evidence that people nowadays change when they find the essence and acquaintance in Nature with freedom, welfare, and pure happiness with simple things and simple acts.
Resistance to civil government
In “Resistance to Civil Government” (pag. 1857), Thoreau replaces some passages from Jefferson’s “Declaration of Independence.” Resistance to civil government is best which governs least. Few people (honest and reformers) serve the State in the correct manner. If people admit slavery, they must not compare with citizen’s redemption, and they also convinced to break. People must take their reprobability of consciousness men, and the law must hold them for this aim. So slavery must be abolished, I adopt the legislature’s machine, which is based on a passive acceptation. If an honest person, could declare that he must be a slave’s possessor, slavery already could vanish.
Thoreau recognized himself in his Government and as a citizen, but he thinks that a maniac believes in America, refusing slavery, and must all men recognize the right of revolution, the right to refuse old governments when tyranny or its inefficiency protects above or slavery, and so people must resist against it. The State comes to recognize the individual as an independent power, though democracy.
