Remember that we use the determiner "the" when we are thinking of a specific thing. Compare the use of "a/an" (indefinite article) and "the" (definite article) in the following examples:
John sat down on a chair (perhaps one of the many chairs in the room).
John sat down on the chair nearest the door (a specific chair).
Clair is looking for a job (not a specific job).
Did
