Addicted to digital technology? Here’s how to beat the habit

Ø Come superare la dipendenza dal telefono

ST title -Wordplay:

-Lexical level, (1) violation of collocational restrictions –beat a habit break (yourself of), get

out of, give up, kick a habit

-Lexical level, (2) habit contains bit (BIT computing: A unit of information expressed as

either a 0 or 1 in binary notation). Compare with byte.

Here’s how to beat the habit: unmarked construction (sort of postponing of the subject,

Here/there+V+S, the equivalent in IT Is the verb+subj)

ː ˈ ɪ ɪ

-Phonetic level, repetition of a similar sound ‘beat’ /bi t/ and ‘habit’ / hab t/ and ‘bit’ /b t/

(WORD PLAY, PUN, COLLOCATION, HOMONYMY,)

The length of the TT, common tendency in the translation from EN into IT, when translating

into IT, the text is longer. A part of the title is omitted, there is a sort of condensation, the

translator mixed up the 2 portions of the original title into a sort of summary of the title,

there is no wordplay, she thought that in Italian title that kind of paly doesn’t work. The

division into paragraphs changes.

PARAGRAPH 1 

▪Recently: adv., -ly/mente ADVERBS in EN the general morphological pattern is the

addition of the suffix -ly (adj+ly= adverb) , similarly in IT we have the addition of the suffix

-ment, and yet in translation we are not obliged to translate literally,

(Recently>recentemente/poco tempo fa) As regards derivational morphology in ITA

there are not the same specific suffixes. An exception to this can be the derivational suffix

-MENTE used for -LY and it has actually the same function of -LY, since we use it to form

adverbs there are syntactic rules: ENG adverbs in -ly can co-occur while ITA adverbs in

-mente cannot co-occur (ex. he acted entirely correclty = ha adito in maniera

perfettamente corretta, and not *ha agito perfettamente correttamente).

▪I, subject/no subject OMISSION OF SUBJECT

“sound” must be on context dependent, which Is not suonare

▪SUCKER, informal, A gullible or easily deceived person (fool, simpleton, innocent, dupe,

▪Apple store / Apple store / negozio della Apple

▪An early glimpse at: EARLY (presto) and GLIMPSE (visione) 

▪Meaninglessness, morphology, prefixes and suffixes (complex word) -less -ness:

derivational suffix to form adjectives from nouns and verbs

▪Possessive adjectives: my low-level addiction, their lives, my belt, my phone, my bag,

EN

your sightline, your cognitive capacities, your phone possessive adjectives also with

inalienable possession there is a tendency when translating from EN into It, to opt for

an article when there is a possessive adjective in the ST (la dipendenza dalla tecnologia,

le vite, il telefono, la borsa)

▪BEAR WITH (me): Be patient or tolerant with someone.

remains

▪Ditto/ il ditto Articles the same because it is a proper name
