Comunicazione
Internet
The Internet is considered the most astonishing technological phenomenon of the last decade and, as it often happens for great discoveries, it was born by chance.
In 1968 US Defence Department had a very serious problem to solve. It consisted in devising a computer system efficient enough to survive a nuclear attack. A centralized system would be too vulnerable.
Experts held out a striking proposal: information would be accessible simultaneously from every point of the country with no hierarchy. Every system would have to be able to originate, to pass, and to receive messages.
Between New York and San Francisco one line only would have been considered unsafe. Instead, more lines with different routes would be more strategically correct.
A system was developed so that various packets of information could be sent from various places and they would reach San Francisco from different parts.
If one packet would not reach San Francisco it had to be presumed that something had happened in a city. By this strategy if one part of the system was destroyed, the rest of the network would remain intact.
In 1969, the US government financed a special project known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network), which at the beginning was limited only to military matters.
Later access expanded, and many Universities and research networks were connected to facilitate the exchange of information.
The first node started to work in 1969 in the University of Los Angeles thanks to a program devised by Vinton Cerf (considered the father of the Internet), who was a student attending computer.
The Internet then grew because supercomputer centres were linked with each other and expanded to mid-level. It started wide academic networks connecting universities and research consortiums.
For twenty years its use had been limited to specialized centres. The Internet took off in 1989 with the arrival of the World Wide Web developed by the staff of CERN of Geneva.
But it was only three years later that the system became popular thanks to an American student who wrote a program, called Mosaic, which consists in a point and click interface, a ‘hypertext’ system (text, images, sound and video) to link documents to each other.
Thanks to Mosaic, static texts have become rich with content, graphics and interactivity. Today it is estimated that the number of people using the Internet regularly are 300m.
