Joyce - Eveline, plot
Eveline is a girl of 19 years old who lives in Dublin, in an industrial big place where there is nothing over there. She has a very monotonous kind of life. She lives with her father after losing her mum. This is the problem Eveline is suffering from, because her mum died early from a terrible disease and she asked her a promise; to keep the family united. This is a family net in which Eveline is paralyzed, because of her mum. One day, having a monotonous life, she met a boy, Frank, a sailor, not an ordinary man. He was going to Buenos Aires and he asked her to go with him. She was waiting for this change in her life because she wanted a change in her life. But at the very moment of this big change, something happens in her mind, memories of her past start to come in her mind. At the beginning she was pondering at her window, smelling the dust from her dirty curtains. She was tired of her life. We know everything she sees, just as there is a camera. There is also the description of life out of her window. The narration is in the past tenses but line 19 brings us to the present with "now". She starts to see all of her house, all the objects she is attached to (also a yellowing photo of a priest of Melbourne). She starts considering all the pros and cons of leaving her home, her family, her work. She is ready to go with him and she remembers the first moment they meet, but at that time her father had discovered this and had forbidden her to see him, so they start to see each other secretly. The evening of her departure arrives and she leaves two letters to her family, one for her father and the other one for Harry (her brother). Now she started to reflect: her father was becoming older so he would miss her more.
She also remembered all the memories with her father. The time had come but she continued to sit by the window. Then an organ in the street started playing. This song, played by an Italian in the street, reminds her of the promise she made her mum before dying, on her dead bed. This is the epiphany.
After all of this she decided to go out, she was in the swaying crowd at the station. A bell rings, everyone is ready to leave. Frank takes her hand to invite her to leave with him. At this point she gripped with both hands to the iron railing, Frank let go his hand. Her look was passive, like an helpless animal, her eyes gave him no sign of love or recognition. Eveline is paralyzed in the family net, tries to escape, but fails.
