The Wife of Bath’s Tale

During the reign of King Arthur, a young Knight rapes a fair young girl. He is condemned to death, but Queen Guinevere wants to save him: if, whitin one year, he can discover what women most want, he will survive. If he cannot find the answer or it’s wrong, he will die.
The knight begins questioning every woman he meets, and obtains different answers. Some want honour, some sex, some money.

Outside a castle in the woods he sees twentyfour girls dancing and singing, but when he approaches they disappear as if by magic, and all that is left is an old hag. The knight explains her his problem, and she says she can answer the questions but forces him to grant any favour she might ask of him in return. The knight agrees.
Arriving at the Court, he gives the answer, saying that women most desire sovreignity over their husbands.
All ladies agree the answer to be true, so the knight is free.
However, the old hag explains the deal bewteen her and the knight, so she requests his hand in marriage. The knight is forced to accept.
On their wedding night, the hag is angry because her husband is repulsed by her.
She asks him what he would prefer between an old ugly woman who is loyal, or a true and beautiful woman who can always be unfaithful. The knight answers saying that the choice is hers, and she is very pleased.
Later, she asks him to kiss her, promising both beauty and fidelity. The knight looks at the hag again, but now finds a young an lovely woman. They live happily forever.

Riassunto in italiano

Durante il regno di Re Artù, un giovane Cavaliere stupra una giovane ragazza. Re Artù lo condannò a morte, ma la regina Ginevra vuole salvarlo: se, a distanza di un anno, riuscirà a scoprire cosa le donne vogliono maggiormente, sopravvirà. Se non riesce a trovare la risposta o è sbagliata, morirà.
Il cavaliere inizia a interrogare ogni donna che incontra e ottiene risposte diverse. Alcune vogliono onore, altre sesso, altre soldi. Fuori da un castello nel bosco vede ventiquattro ragazze che ballano e cantano, ma quando si avvicina scompaiono come per magia, e tutto ciò che rimane è una vecchia strega. Il cavaliere le spiega il suo problema, e lei dice che può rispondere alle domande ma lo costringe a concederle qualsiasi favore che potrebbe chiedere a lui in cambio. Il cavaliere è d'accordo.
Arrivato alla Corte, dà la risposta, dicendo che le donne desiderano più di qualunque altra cosa la sovranità sui loro mariti.
Tutte le donne concordano che la risposta è vera, quindi che cavaliere è libero.
Tuttavia, la vecchia strega spiega l'accordo tra lei e il cavaliere, così lei chiede la sua mano in matrimonio. Il cavaliere è costretto ad accettare.
Nella loro prima notte di nozze, la strega è arrabbiata perché suo marito è respinto da lei.
Lei gli chiede cosa preferirebbe tra una vecchia donna brutta che è leale, o una donna vera e bella che può sempre essere infedele. Il cavaliere risponde dicendo che la scelta è sua e lei è molto contenta.
Più tardi, lei gli chiede di baciarla, promettendo sia la bellezza che la fedeltà. Il cavaliere guarda di nuovo la strega, ma ora trova una giovane donna adorabile. Vivono per sempre felici e contenti.
