The Immortality of Love and Poetry in Spenser's Amoretti

Spenser's Amoretti is a sequence of 89 sonnets dedicated to his future wife. This is the Sonnet 75.

The poem develops through dialogue between the poet and his loved lady.

The themes are the mortality of all creatures, love stronger than death and immortality of poetry.

ONE day I wrote her name upon the strand,

But came the waves and washèd it away:

Again I wrote it with a second hand,

But came the tide and made my pains his prey.

Vain man (said she) that dost in vain assay

A mortal thing so to immortalise;

For I myself shall like to this decay,

And eke my name be wipèd out likewise.

Not so (quod I); let baser things devise

To die in dust, but you shall live by fame;

My verse your virtues rare shall eternise,

And in the heavens write your glorious name:

Where, when as Death shall all the world subdue,

Our love shall live, and later life renew.

Un giorno scrissi il suo nome sulla riva,

ma vennero le onde e lo lavarono via:

lo scrissi di nuovo con una grafia,

ma venne la marea e fece delle mie fatiche la sua preda.

[parla la sua Lady] Uomo vanitoso, lei disse, che cerchi invano,

così di rendere immortale una cosa mortale,

poichè io stessa sarò come questo decadimento

e anche il mio nome sarà ugualmente cancellato.

Non così, ( dissi io) lascia alle cose più vili la sorte

di morire nella polvere, ma tu vivraì attraverso la fama:

i miei versi renderanno eterne le tue virtù,

e nei cieli scriveranno il tuo glorioso nome.

Dove quando la morte avrà sottomesso tutto il mondo,

il nostro amore vivrà e in seguito la vita rigenererà.

Dialogue between the poet and his beloved

The poet wants to write his lady's name on the strand, but it is impossible, because the waves washed it.

So his Lady says he's vain ( intellectual vanity ) because he tries to do something that is impossible: to immortalise a mortal thing.

He answer to her that their love will not die, because his verse eternise her virtues. So their love shall live forever. The love is stronger than the death.

Il poeta vuole scrivere il nome della sua lady sulla riva, ma è impossibile dato che le onde lo cancellano.

Dunque la sua Lady gli dice che è un uomo vanitoso ( vanità intelletuale) perchè prova a fare qualcosa che è impossiblile: rendere immortale una cosa mortale.

Lui le risponde che il loro amore non perirà, perchè i suoi versi renderanno eterne le sue virtù. Così il oro amore vivrà per sempre. L'amore è più forte della morte.
