  • Rehabilitation: branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities or handicap.
  • What is Rehabilitation Engineering? It is the application of science and technology to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities or at risk.
  • What is Bioengineering in Motor Rehabilitation? It is the application of bioengineering methods and techniques for the functional evaluation of motor functions in people with disabilities.
  • Schematic Diagram of the Rehabilitation Process
  • DEFINITIONS:
    • Functional Evaluation: methods and tools for the objective assessment of disability and motor functional status in the subject.
    • Functional Recovery: systems for the restoration of the impaired motor functions. E.g. FES = Functional Electrical Stimulation.
    • Functional Replacement: systems for the replacement of the affected organ. E.g. of prostheses.
  • AIDS: technologically advanced systems as extra aids for the disabled person.
  • TRAINUS: methodologies and tools for the training of disabled and assistive personnel in the use of the new technologies.
  • EX of Functional Recovery: FES = Functional Electrical Stimulation
    • residue the function where there's an injury in the spinal cord
    • from simple at the point I can evaluate the physical activity of the patient
  • EX of Functional Replacement: Acute Knee Prosthesis, Bionic Hand
  • EX of Technology Aids: Robotic System (Elevated wheelchair, service robot)
  • Functional Evaluation addresses the issue related to the assessment of motor function in the presence of disability and it's goal is the development of tools and methodologies for the analysis of motor disability based in quantitative indexes derived from the results of the analysis of movement parameters.
    • The research conducted in this area has an immediate use in the rehabilitation in terms of rehabilitation planning (Ex. Duis Protocol: if focused on children and used to decide if it is necessary an intervention). Therefore, it can be used to try to restore the function to verify the efficacy of treatments and derivate the possibility of comparison between different solutions.
  • Implications in other sectors: telemedicine, prevention, ergonomics, srs
  • Each year hundreds of disabled people suffer a lesion of central nervous system (cns) following for example, strokes cerebral and medullary trauma. The new pharma
