England is the largest country in the UK it has the largest population and occupies more than half of the UK's geographical area. It is separeted from France by the English Channel, althought with the Channel Tunnel it is no longer completely cut off from Europe. England is divided into administrative units, or countries, such as Devon, Kent, East Anglia, Norfolk, Cornwall. Southern and eastern England is mainly a flatland, sometimes dotted with small hills, which get higher in the far south east with two rows of chalk hills, known as the Downs. The south west peninsula is a plateau wuth heather-covered moors and a beautiful steep coastline. In rthe north and north central part of England there are still farmlands and moors, together with a line of large hills, the Pennine chain, known as the backbone of England. In the north east of England the Lake District offers a spectacular cluster of hills and mountains, which have inspired the imagination of many writers and poets.
