Evoluzione della stampa britannica
The British press has always been divided into two categories: broadsheets and tabloids. In recent years some broadsheet daily newspapers (considered more serious newspapers) have changed their sizes: they are narrower and shorter than then broadsheet format, but taller and wider than the tabloid format. So today it seems to be more convenient to speak of quality press and popular press. The quality of newspapers deal with politics, business, economics, culture, sports, editorial opinions and overseas news. The most important are The Independent, The Times and The Guardian; they haven't got a wide circulation, because they are expensive and are more difficult to read.
Caratteristiche della stampa popolare
The popular newspapers are smaller and are characterized by large headlines, big and exclusive photos. They deal with gossip stories about celebrities and are written in a simple and more colloquial language. The most important are The Daily Mail, The Daily Express (they report stories about crime and social problems), The Sun and The Mirror (they mainly have articles about famous people, scandals and gossip stories).
Importanza dei giornali domenicali
The Sunday papers are a very important part of British Life and most of the daily papers have a Sunday edition, which is much bigger than the daily version with many magazines and summaries of the week's news.
As well as the national newspapers throughout the British Isles and most towns have their own local newspapers full of stories about local people and events.
