What was the British Empire?
The British Empire was a global power that contained countries owned by the United Kingdom. The empire was the largest empire in history and at its peak controlled one quarter of the world's surface! Around 500 million people! It began to grow in 15th century during the European Age of discovery until it reached its peak in 1921. There were many countries in the British Empire across the entire globe including Australia, Singapore, India, South Africa and Canada.

The most famous part of the British Empire was the East India Trading Company, which started out as a small business before becoming a very large trading company which many people depended on.
During the five decades following World War II, most of the territories of the Empire became independent. Many went on to join the Commonwealth of Nations, a free association of independent states.

What is the Commonwealth?
The Commonwealth is a group of 53 nations (about 1.8 billion people) from all over the world. It is a voluntary association of independent sovereign states of many religions, races, languages and cultures. Most of its members are republics.
The promotion of human rights and democracy is an important part of the Commonwealth's role. The Commonwealth also organises many activities and initiatives. Every four years athletes from the Commonwealth Nations get together to take part in the famous Commonwealth Games. They have been a popular competition since they were first held in 1930s.
