In 1963 he had signed the emancipation declaration which declared all slaves as free and so All the southern owners were obliged to free their slaves and so they lost a lot of their power and of their money. But blacks weren't considered as equal members of american society infact they didn't enjoy the same rights as the whites did.They couldn't attend the same jobs as the whits, they couldn't enter in the same buildings as the whites, they couldn't sit on the same seats in buses because they were reserved for white people.The slaves couldn't read and write and so they were forced to live in segregation, the couldn't attend school with whites.

Ma i neri non erano considerati come i bianchi, infatti non godevano degli stessi diritti dei bianchi, non potevano sedersi sui posti nei pulman riservati ai bianchi, non potevano entrare negli stessi edifici dei bianchi e non potevano frequentare le stesse scuole dei bianchi. La maggior parte degli schiavi non sapeva leggere così furono costretti a vivere in quartieri speciali e furono costretti ad accettare i lavori più squallidi, dipendevano cmq dai bianchi per sopravvivere.
