The civil war broke out in 1861 and there was a huge difference between the economy of the Northern and Southern States. The north was fairly industrialized while the economy of the South was based on agriculture and here the main source of income of the owners was the labor on the plantations by the slaves. Slavery was against the fundamental principle of the Declaration of Independence of 1776 according to which all men are created equal. The north of the country could no longer tolerate this situation which south defended slavery.
