The Suffragette Movement: Definition and Meaning

A suffragette is a woman seeking the right to vote through organized protests. The term "suffrage" combined with the suffix "-ette" to create the word. Originally, the word was used in a denigrating way.

The Movement in Italy:

In Italy, the suffragette movement began in 1946 with the founding of the Unione donne important figures organization by Ada Negri. Women in Milan voted for the first time in 1899, with the aim of giving women the same political, social, and civilian status as men. Other notable figures in the movement include Ersilia Majno and Irma Melany Scodnik.

The Movement in France:

In France, the suffragette movement was founded in 1909 by Jeanne Schmahl, who established the Union française pour le suffrage des femmes. Women in France gained the right to vote on October 5, 1944. In 1970, the "Mouvement de Libération des femmes" was founded by Antoinette Fouque, Monique Wittig, and Josiane Chanel. This movement is divided into four trends.
