Overview of the study

Lenore M. McWey, Ming Cui, and Kendal Holtrop (2014) published a study in the Journal of Research on Adolescence, 25(1), 44-50, examining caregiver and adolescent dyadic disagreement and its relation to problem behaviors in adolescents involved in the child welfare system.

Discrepancies in reports

Some researchers had noticed important discrepancies between the reports of caregivers and adolescents about the behaviors of adolescents, but they failed to define a method for examining the data.

Purpose of the study

The study purposes to analyze the degree of agreement between caregivers and adolescents about youth's internalizing behavior problems. The disagreement is a predictor of externalizing adolescent's behavior problems.

Hypotheses

The researchers hypothesize that, during this longitudinal study, externalizing problems will increase with increasing levels of disagreement between caregivers and adolescents.

Participants and methodology

The participants are children selected by NASCAW from the United States. The mean age was 6.6 years, but the researchers included only adolescents aged 11-16 years because the study focused on the adolescents' problems. The children were divided into two groups: one is subjected to CWS investigations, the other group is in a condition of OOH (children placed out of home).
