What about overfishing?
Ocean ecosystems could collapse by 2048. Killing dolphins, turtles, sharks...
Fishing nets catch dolphins, sharks, turtles, stingrays, and any other animal in their path.
Filling oceans with plastic = Plastic in guts of fish. Scientists have found microparticles of plastic in the bodies of humans as a result of eating fish and other sea animals who commonly ingest plastic.
(9 week) 16 dicembre GRUPPO 31° link - THE PLUMMERY:
Is it possible to restore the connection between humans and landscapes?
Yes, the plummery is a project which tries to regain that connection.
(So many people are losing their connection with land and food)
And is it possible to produce a decent amount of food on a standard-sized urban block?
Yes, it is. The plummery is a small suburban block about six kilometers from the center of Melbourne, Australia. Inside the plummery, the food-producing area is about 100 square meters, so 1/3 of the place. This small
- areaproduced a large quantitive of food which supply two adults and regular guests.
- there is a farming side dedicated to Quail ---> quite animals which can be farmed in small city blocks with neighbors.
- The plummery project is not aiming for self-sufficiency but instead they are aiming for community dependence. ---> aiming to have most of their diet come from local producers and households.
- They don't spend a lot of time and effort in farming (4 hours a week) ---> what does take a lot of time is setting up the farming systems and learning the skills to grow food.
- How can I start this lifestyle? The speaker suggests starting with a small area that can be easy to manage and look after.
- Why is it so important to start this lifestyle? In times of crisis, one of the things that becomes most critical is access to fresh produce/foods. And this can also minimize packaging, transport, fuel and chemical use, and all the impacts that come along with produced foods.
- The speaker was pretty clear even if she has an Australian accent. She was easy to follow: she started with the main question: is it possibly ... and she tells us that is possibly due to/through The plummery project. She makes pauses and uses a soft and warm/calm voice.
- The structure of the video has a documentary style: use of shots of place and people as a report/reportage. Alternation of interview's shots and shots about food-producing area, food and gardening. Very well made video, it looks professionally made and expensive. They use zooms to look at the details and drone shots.
paint. For energy they have 6 batteries and 4 solar panels > very important to them tracking the energy consum.
Main thing about this video is about creating an efficient house, where you can put more object, in a small place since it is a house track, in order to create a MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE.
About the speaker and the structure of the video:
- The speakers aren't so easy to follow due to their strong accents but overall the footage/film was understandable. (They often mumbling words)
- The structure of the video has as well a documentary style but it seems more amateur than the previous one. Alternation of interview('s) shoots and shoots about the tiny house track elements. The interview shoots were alternated with static camera shots and a camera which follows the speakers.
Personal opinion:
In both videos there are young people like us who decided to do radical choice because they feel that the system is not right and so they have to do something.
This concept of living in a tiny
house is gaining popularity around the world. Often this tiny house are mobile like in the video.
Why a tiny house? --> it's a symbol because in a smaller house you have fewer things > there is less attachment to things and less things to maintain.
---> it is also easier to maintain in the energetic point of view.
People tend to look them as the new hippies but these people are not trying to change the world like the hippies and people who wanted to change the world and create a new society, those are individual expressions that don't affect the world.
These people are trying to build POCKETS OF RESILIENCE, which means the ability to bounce back from a crisis.
---> this is an important ability of the future that my generation and the future ones need to achieve (9 week) 16 dicembre DEFORESTATION / REGENERATION
- deforestation and natural disasters, explained:
Main question:- what happens when we deforest the upper watershed?
Main point:- more than 50% of a tree is made up of
1) A watershed. This video can be used in an elementary school to explain deforestation to kids.
2) An actual case: Haiti
Facts:
- Haiti is the POOREST COUNTRY of the western hemisphere
- Haiti is SEVERELY DEFORESTED > forests are cut to MAKE CHARCOAL for FUEL
- The island where Haiti is located has a Dominican Republic's side > the D.R. side has forest protection applied.
- Looking closely at the border of these two countries, we can see how the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC SIDE of the border is FORESTED while the HAITIAN SIDE is BARE.
- Viewing satellite images, we can see clouds that are formed over the forested D.R. side and missing from the barren Haitian side.
Main points:
- LACK OF CLOUDS on the HAITIAN BARREN SIDE illustrates the fact that the presence of FORESTS CONTRIBUTES TO CLOUD FORMATION.
- In Haiti, there are also densely populated areas where waterways flow through cities into the sea.
- So when a major STORM EVENT happens, CITIES ARE WASHED OUT BY FLOODWATERS and the SOIL GOES INTO THE
Rise of LACTOSE INTOLERANCE, HEALTHIER DIETS and VEGANISM
Half of the cashews production come from VIETNAM, INDIA and IVORY COAST > poor countries with DANGEROUS HUMAN CONDITIONS
Cashews shell is surrounded by a toxic oil that if your skin coming into contact with that cause itching and skin rashes > people who work there refusing to work because toxic oil burn the skin. And besides that they get miserable pays like less than 3€ a day > and if they refused to work they get beaten, tortured, deprived of food and water and pay less.
AVOCADOS:
Avocados are a significant contributor to the GLOBAL DEFORESTATION. And once they are picked they are put in temperature controlled rooms. > other environmental costs with INFRASTRUCTURE and TRANSPORTATION > AVOCADOS' CARBON FOOTPRINT is five BIGGER than a banana
Due to the increasing demand on Avocados in producer countries such as Chile and Mexico, where WATER IS PRIVATISED > create a
difficult access to water for many citizens > WATER CRISIS
DRUG CARTEL PROBLEM and the increase of murder, corruption and violence due to the avocado industry
Lettura 4.2 ITALY'S ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT
In the 20s the GDP (Gross Domestic Product = PIL, prodotto interno lordo) was created.> GDP is a measure of the value produced by a single country in a specific year. --> this is for measure the development of a Country (in terms of “material wellness,”) (index of the growth in consumption )> Increasing GDP is no longer the priority. ---> we need another index, which will help us to put our impact (our footprint) on the environment into control.> Nowadays the index that measure the progress of a Country is assessed by (= è valutata da) their environment impact. (their footprint)we know that, in doing our ORDINARY ACTIVITIES, we PRODUCE a certain PRESSURE ON NATURE: we use raw materials (to produce new products); in this process, we CONSUME ENERGY and
GENERATECO2 EMISSIONS; we PRODUCE WASTE; we USE SPACE for urban infrastructure etc…> We can measure these index separately> From 1990 we can use a index which synthesizes all these activities in one number. ---> ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT> An index that measures our environmental impact either at a global or at a country level> The Ecological Footprint tracks the use of six categories of productive surface areas: cropland, grazingland, fishing grounds, built-up land, forest area, and carbon demand on land> Biocapacity represents the productivity of its ecological assets ---> These areas can also absorb much ofthe waste we generate, especially our carbon emissions.• Both the ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT and BIOCAPACITY are EXPRESSED in GLOBAL HECTARES---> By comparing the Ecological Footprint and Biocapacity we can say if a Country/ the World is in acondition of:> ECOLOGICAL DEFICIT: when the Ecological Footprint ex
