Efficient Reading Strategies
1. Skimming: Skimming helps you get the general idea of a text without reading every
word. It's useful when you need to quickly grasp the main points, such as when
preparing for a discussion or tutorial. Skim the table of contents, preface, and index,
then read the first and last paragraphs of chapters, and the first sentences of other
paragraphs. This should give you about 50% of the text’s meaning, helping you
decide if you need further detailed reading.
2. Scanning: Scanning is used to find specific information within a text. Unlike
skimming, which gives you a general overview, scanning involves looking for key
expressions or specific details. It's useful for assignments where you need precise
data.
3. Intensive Reading: Intensive reading involves closely reading a text with a focus
on detail, often for specific learning purposes. This method is slower and more
deliberate, used for tasks like answering true/false statements or putting events in
order.
4. Extensive Reading: Extensive reading focuses on reading as much as possible for
enjoyment, at a level where you can read smoothly without frequent dictionary use.
Principles include not looking up words, skipping parts you don't understand, and
switching books if you're not enjoying one. This approach helps reinforce known
words and learn new ones in context.
5. Stages in Reading a Text:
o Before Reading: Skim the text to get an overview—examine titles,
headings, subheadings, diagrams, and summaries.
o During Reading: Scan relevant sections for details, following the
development of ideas. Read actively by taking notes, highlighting, and
asking critical questions.
o After Reading: Summarize the main ideas to solidify your understanding.
6. Detailed Reading: Necessary for subjects that require deep understanding, like law
or literature. Combine it with skimming and scanning for efficiency, and take notes
directly in the text.
7. Revision Reading: Involves quickly reviewing familiar material to reinforce
knowledge. Summarize main points onto small cards for easy reference.
8. What is Intensive reading?
9. Intensive reading involves learners reading in detail with specific learning aims
and tasks. It can be compared with extensive reading, which involves learners
reading texts for enjoyment and to develop general reading skills
10. For example, the learners read a short text and put events from it into
chronological order. In fact, in the classroom Intensive reading activities include:
scanning a text for specific information to answer true or false statements or filling
gaps in a summary, scanning a text to match headings to paragraphs, and scanning
jumbled paragraphs and then reading them carefully to put them into the correct
order.
