The European Union is a political and economic organisation which has decided to join forces for their mutual benefits. The objectives of the EU include the defence of freedom, respect for the human rights, solidarity between the Union’s people etc… The EU is the result of a process of cooperation and integration which began 1951 with plan’s Schuman.In fact the EU was established in 1992 under Maastricht treaty but the first organisation was the EEC established in 1957 under Rome treaty which made European trade easier and cheaper by reducing taxes.
In 1985 Schengen treaty established free movement between the which signed it; in the 1997 Amsterdam treaty provided further protection and extension of citizen’s right and in 2001 Nice treaty introduced changes in the EU in preparation for enlargement.

THE SYMBOLS OF THE EU
The symbols of the European Union are:
- The flag has been used as the EU flag since 1986. it consists of a circle of 12 gold stars on a blue background. The circle of gold stars represents solidarity and harmony between the peoples of Europe.
- The anthem of the EU is the “Ode of joy”
- The euro, the European single currency came into being on 1st January 1999
- On May 9th is considered the Europe day

THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
• Made up of 785 members elected every five years by the people of members states
• Normally it meets in Strasbourg
• Legislative power
• Supervision of the executive

THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL
• Called the “European summit”
• Composed of the heads of State and Government
• Meets twice a year
• Sets the general guidelines for Europe’s development and activities

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

• It’s the executive institutions
• Made up of twenty independent member appointed for five years

THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS
• Consist of the Ministers of the Member states for each specific area (agriculture, finance, transport, etc…)
• Shares executive power with the Commission
• It has the power to ensure that the treaties ore observed, to propose the legislation, to administer the policies

THE COURT OF JUSTICE

• Made up fifteen judges
• Ensures that the law is observed in the application of the treaties and in all of the activities of the union

THE COURT OF AUDITORS
• Made up of fifteen members appointed for a six-year term
• Responsible to check that the EU spends its money according to its budgetary rules
