Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 (300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England.

when he was eight, his family moved to St Albans,aa town about 20 miles north of London.at eleven Stphen went to St Albans School, sasew and then on to University College, Oxford, where he did Phisics.

In 1962 he was awarded a first class honours degree in Natural Science. Stephen then went on ti Cambrige to do researh in Cosmology. he is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Caius College in Cambrdige. the chair was founded in 1663 and was held by Isaac Newton.

Stephen hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe and investigated the origin of the universe, and the nature of black holes.

He published a Brief History of Time, a bestseller of popular science.Although ha has had motor neurone disease for all his adult life and is now almost completely paralysed, Sthephen Hawking continues to combine family life (he has three children and one grandchild), and his research intotheoretical physics.

In April 2007 he took a zero-gravity spaceflight and could move freely without his wheelchair after 40 years. he now communicates through an infra-red "blink switch" with his computer.

"I have been lucky, that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. But it shows that one need not lose hope" he says.
