George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, born in 1903 in Bengal, India. He studied in England, where he was sent at the age of eight. He won a scholarship and was admitted to Eton, where he was treated badly because he wasn't wealthy. After Eton, he went to Burma, where he served in the Indian Imperial Police for three years. He returned in Europe and abandoned his middle class friends and family and worked in London and Paris hotels and restaurants. He died in 1950, after the publication of his novel "1984".

In 1984 tyhe world is divided in three parts: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia, which fight against each other. Britain is a part of Oceania, and is ruled by a totalitarian dictatorship whose leader is Big Brother. Nobody knows if he really exists, but he watches every street and building from huge posters; even in private houses, Big Brother watches everyone using telescreens, located in every house. Society is divided between members of the Party and the proles; the Party controls people's mind through the ministry of truth.

The main character is Winston Smith -his name derives from Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister, and the most common surname in Britain, Smith-. He works for the Ministry of Truth, but he cannot share their fanaticism; he starts to keep a diary, trying to understand what's going on. He meets Julia, and they start a relationship, that is illegal because they make love and collect old furniture. When their relationship is discovered, both are subjected to brainwash; at the end of it, Winston can only adore Big Brother with all himself.
