Charles Dickens’life

Charles Dickens had a very miserable and unhappy life because his father was arrested when he was very young, so he had to work to help his family, in fact he was sent to factories, where the living conditions were very pitiful, especially for children, who were exploited. When his father was released, he was asked to continue to work, but this time he worked in a printer shop, so he started his career as an editor.
Charles Dickens’ life is fully described in a lot of his writings, for example David Copperfield and Oliver Twist (“David Copperfield” and “Oliver Twist” are autobiographical novels).
At the beginning of his writing career, he was very good at writing, so he started to describe the conditions of the workers. Then he became a kind of social critic because he started to denounce the conditions of the workers of that time, because no one really knew the conditions of living of those people
(this is very important because Charles Dickens was the first to denounce the terrible living conditions of the workers).
But Charles Dickens’ limit is that he just described the situation, he felt positive, optimistic, he believed that the situation would change, he believed in the human beings, he was confident that the situation would improve, so his job is just to describe the conditions, to make the people aware of the conditions. Moreover, Charles Dickens is considered the father of the British novels. (In fact, the Victorian period is a period of novels, writers). Women were not really evaluated and appreciated because they had different rules: the men had to bring money to family, while women had the important role of looking after the house, the children, they had different rules and different things to do.

Charles Dickens’ way of writing

When he started to write, his way of writing was based on sensationalism (“sensationalism” is described as the act by newspapers, television of presenting information in a way that is shocking or exciting). His objective was that of make people laugh, cry and wait.
“Make people laugh”: publishing comic novels
“Make the readers cry”: publishing Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, in which he exposed lives of children in the slums and factories, inspiring himself to the suffering experience he felt in his childhood.
“Make the readers wait”: he wrote novels in which he described people that had great expectations but were disappointed by life.
