Si nota come l’evento descritto non è avvenuto una sola volta nel passato, ma è qualcosa che descrive un’azione ripetuta o continuata nel passato per un certo periodo, come un’abitudine o uno stato.
Il questo caso queste due forme possono anche sostituire il Past Simple. Per esempio:My mother had a red car.
My mother used to have a red car.
Oppure:
Before the invention of the car people travelled on horseback.
Before the invention of the car people would travel on horseback.
Come si vede nel primo esempio, Used to e Would possono essere utilizzati per descrivere azioni che accadevano nel passato. Mentre Would può essere utilizzato SOLO per descrivere azioni, Used to può essere anche utilizzato per descrivere stati:
When I was little I used to have a lot of toys.
Mentre è sbagliato dire: When I was little I would have a lot of toys. E’ sbagliato!
La forma interrogativa di Used to è:
did + soggetto + use to + forma base del verbo
Did you use to have....?
La forma negativa di Used to si forma anteponento did not (o didn’t):
No, I didn’t used to have....
