Life and main works
- Harold Pinter was born at Hackney, East London, in 1930, into a Jewish working-class family.
- He was educated at Hackney Grammar School.
- His adolescence was marked by experiences of prejudice and violence.
- He declared himself a conscientious objector on the ground of his radical pacifism.
- The Room and The Caretaker are the most important plays by him.
The pattern of Pinter’s plays
- The starting point of his plays is always a commonplace situation which becomes full of mystery and fear.
- We can also find the introduction of symbolic or even supernatural elements.
- In his play The Room, there are two people in a room which represents their only refuge against the hostile world outside.
- These characters are afraid and this fear increases when the arrival of an intruder (another character, an animal or an object) upsets the balance of their life.
- The result can be madness and sometimes death.
Characters and atmosphere
- In Pinter’s plays, the world that surrounds his characters is normally indefinite.
- His plays do not follow a logical pattern.
- His method of characterization is strongly innovative.
- Nobody gives information about the characters’ past, their background, their appearance. Even the names are not certain.
- His plays are characterized by the impossibility of identifying truth and it gives a sense of suspense.
- In his plays the author does not give a solution to the mystery.
Use of language
- Pinter’s language is perhaps the most original contribution to the Theatre of the Absurd.
- The author wants to recreate the average everyday conversation with its colloquialisms, repetitions, incorrect syntax, pauses and protracted silence.
- Silence is an essential part. We can distinguish between two kinds of silence: one when no word is spoken and the other when perhaps a torrent of language is employed.
- The “Theatre of language” is a perfect mix of suspense, tension, tragedy and laughter with the impression of reality.
- His language is poetic, rather than naturalistic.
- The most important skill of Pinter is to turn ordinary lower-class people and events into a poetic vision.
Vida
