Henry VIII and his six wives

• Henry VII was interested in maintaining a balanced situation and a kingdom without wars, so he made an alliance with the most important lands.
• He married Elizabeth of York and they had 6 children, 4 of whom survived
1. Arthur = married Catherine of Aragon (from Spain= it had a powerful fleet thanks to whom it controlled the Mediterranean Sea).
2. Margaret = married the Prince of Scotland
3. Ann = married the Prince of France
4. Henry= was appointed Duke of York
• Arthur died because of healthy problems, so the relationship between England and Spain was ruined
- Henry VII wanted to arrange a marriage between Catherine (17 years old) and his son Henry (2 years old) to reconnect the relationships with Spain
- He needed to ask the permission to the Arc-bishop of Canterbury, but he didn’t agree
- He waited until his son was 18 years old
• Henry married his sister-in-law (Catherine) and ascended to the throne with the name of Henry VIII
• Henry VIII was handsome, intelligent and he loved the culture and his population
• He reduced the aristocratic power by promoting the gentry, which was formed by gentlemen
• Catherine was in love with Henry VIII, but he considered her too much older for him
- They needed to give to the country an heir, so she rested pregnant 2 times.
However, the babies died. She rested pregnant another time and she gave birth to a female, who was called Mary Tudor
- There was a problem= women couldn’t reign and Catherine went to menopause
- Henry VIII needed an heir= he had a lot of sons, but they were illegitimate. The only way to have an opportunity was to divorce Catherine
• Henry VIII focused his attention on Anne Boleyn, who was Catherine’s lady-in-waiting
- She was extremely clever and a sort of “game” started between them. They were flirting by giving and denying attentions, so the king went crazy for her
- Anne said that she was ready for Henry, but not as a lover as a wife
- Henry couldn’t marry Anne because of Catherine. She was catholic and they couldn’t divorce. In addition, with the divorce they could get Spain as an enemy
- Henry asked the pope to grant him the divorce, but he refused. At the same time, he couldn’t kill Catherine because she was overprotected
• To reach his goal, Henry VIII abandoned catholic religion, he refused to recognise the pope as Head of the Church and he proclaimed himself Head of the Anglican Church - Act of Supremacy (1534)
• The relationship with the Roman Church was broken and now Anglicanism and Protestantism were the new religions
• The population wasn’t really happy because the king imposed his religion
- They didn’t recognise Anne as the queen
- There were a lot of attempts to king’s life, so he made an act to condemn to death who didn’t recognise the king and the queen
• There was made also an act to declare Henry and Anne’s son the heir of the kingdom, so they excluded Mary Tudor
• Anne remained pregnant (1535) and she gave birth to a girl, who is called Elizabeth
• They tried to have more children, but there were a lot of abortions and babies’ death
- Ann couldn’t have children anymore and she was desperate because she was unable to give the king a male child
- She was afraid the king could get rid of her, so she asked her brother to sleep with her. He agreed, but at the moment he refused
- They were discovered and accused of incest. So, they both beheaded in a public place (19th May 1536)
• The king became fatter and fatter, no more handsome and most of all no more faithful
• Henry VIII rested widower and he focused his attention on Jane Seymour, who was a lady-in-waiting
- 10 days after the execution he got married
- Jane remained pregnant and fortunately the baby was a male Edward VI
- Henry was on cloud nine, but his son had health problems
- Jane had a complicated delivery and she never recovered fully, so 10 days after it she died
- Henry really loved her and after her death, he was depressed
• Henry understood that his son would probably die and he needed a new heir
- He married Ann of Clèves, who was French and she was 15 years old (1540)
- They got married, but they didn’t know each other. When they met, they didn’t like their partner
- They never consummated the marriage, so they declared it null
- She received a mansion with a lot of lands and an annual wage as a reward
• Then, Henry VIII married Catherine Howard (Anne Boleyn’s cousin)
- She was 26 years old and extremely beautiful, but she wanted only the title
- She didn’t love the king, so she shared the bed with other guys
- The marriage lasted 2 years, then the king had a trial of treason and Catherine was beheaded in 1542
• Henry VIII decided to marry Catherine Parr (1543)
- She was a widow and the age gap was not high
- She contributed to the reconciliation between Henry, Mary and Elizabeth. She tried to reunite the family
- She fell in love with a man in the court and the king discovered this betrayal. She was going to accuse her of treason, but the king died in 1553 before it could happen
