Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife: Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth became queen in 1558 at the age of 25, she was well educated and she studied French, Italian, Spanish and Latin. She was excommunicated in 1570 because she recognized the autonomy of the Anglican Church from Rome. The war between England and Spain broke out in 1587, after Mary Stuart's execution; the Invincible Armada was a Spanish fleet made up of over a hundred and thirty ships that was defeated off by English ships because were lighter and easier to manoeuvre. The Elizabethan period continued to mark the maritime and commercial achievement, and the colonial expansion. During the Elizabethan Age born a world famous dramatist poet: William Shakespeare.
