The Barbary Corsairs

Between the 7th and the 9th century the Prophet Mohammed started a new religion: the Islam. The followers were called Muslims. This religion expanded to the Middle East and the North Africa. The Christians were very worried. They wanted to expand. The Christian faith and the Muslims wanted to control the Mediterranean Sea. They created a new kind of pirate: the Corsairs. Christians worked for Christian governements, Muslims worked for Muslim governements. They lived on the Barbary Coast.
Many Christians worked for the Knigts of Saint John, a military order. The Corsairs' favourite booty was humans. They sold them as slaves. Malta had the biggest slave market.
During this time, the British and French governements fought against the Corsairs. Soon the Corsairs disappeared.
