Ryanair and EasyJet: Champions of Low Cost Travel
Low cost airlines represent the alternative solution for those who want to
travel without spending a fortune. These airlines have generally lower fares but
fewer comforts than those of national flag companies. To make up for revenue lost
in cheaper flights the airline may charge for extras like food, priority boarding, seat
allocations and baggage.
For the last 20 years; two low cost airlines have been ruling the skies over
Europe; Ryanair and EasyJet. The EasyJet Airline Company is a British airline
headquartered at London’s Luton Airport, it is the largest airline in the United
Kingdom which has seen rapid expansion since its establishment in 1995. On the
other hand Ryanair, an Irish low cost airline headquartered at Dublin Airport, was
founded earlier, in 1985 by Christopher Ryan and an Irish businessman Tony Ryan.
Only in 1991 whit Michael O’Leary the company became one of Europa’s largest
carriers.
Ryanair serves a number of major European airports including Barcelona,
Marseille, Dublin, London-Gatwick and it has also focused on sun destinations
such as the Canary Island and Greece; similarly EasyJet’s destinations cover
almost all of Europe but include also intercontinental routes such as Morocco,
Turkey, Egipt, Israel and Iceland. What distinguish Ryanair from EasyJet is the fact
