Barbara Quintiliani How new media are changing politics
Technological changes over the past 10 years have been surprising; the
next years will surely be more so. New media, such as mobile phones, internet
and social networks, have revolutionized our life in many ways but there is a
field in which new media have played a significant role; politics. Indeed new
media can be used to share information, to organize popular participation and
also to monitor and to support political elections.
First of all, new technologies are undoubtedly important means that
enable people to connect and interact with each others. Moreover, new social
media are already changing the way organizations attract supporters. For
instance, the American Red Cross raised a record $8 million plus for Haitian
relief efforts via the social network Twitter. Furthermore, researchers Adi
Kuntsman and Rebecca L. Stein argue that “Digital media has changed the
nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli military occupation by
offering local populations new tools to interface with, support, contest, and/or
agitate against state policies”.
