When I get home this evening I will take (take) a long bath and relax.

The name of the structure is simple future. It's formed using will + base form of the verb. 'Will' is often used when we're talking about a decision at the moment of speaking.

08. Complete the sentences below with some, any or no.

  • I don't usually have any free time in the afternoon, but today I have no work to do so I can relax at home for a while.
  • Do you have any money? Yes, I have some change in my wallet.
  • My friend lent me some crime novels, but I haven't read any of them yet.

The name of the structure is past continuous (or past progressive tense). It's formed by combining the past tense of 'to be' (i.e. was/were) with the verb's present participle (-ing word). It can be used to describe something that was happening continuously in the past when another action interrupted it.

After work this evening my sister and I are going (go) to the cinema. She has already bought the tickets.

The name of the structure is future tense (in particular intentional future). It's formed by combining the "be going to" + the base form of the verb. It can be used to talk about future plans and intentions or to predict something that we think is certain to happen or which we have evidence for now.

14. Complete the sentence using the verb in brackets. Use the correct grammar rule and explain the rule below.

We were cooking (cook) dinner when the phone rang.

The name of the structure is past continuous (or past progressive tense). It's formed by combining the past tense of 'to be' (i.e. was/were) with the verb's present participle (-ing word).
