Sides of a triangle
In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle. It is always the longest side of a right triangle.
The opposite leg is the side opposite to the angle we are interested in, while the adjacent leg is the side next to the angle we are interested in.
For instance, if we look at angle α above, then a is the opposite side and b is the adjacent side.
Trigonometric functions
In a right triangle, the sine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the hypotenuse.
The cosine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the hypotenuse: it is so called because it is the sine of the complementary angle, or co-angle.
The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side.
