Derivatives in maths
Nuggets of theory
Differentiation: The process of finding a derivative.
Key concepts in differentiation
Corner point: Specific points on the curve of a function where the derivative may not exist due to a sharp turn.
Cusp or cuspid: A point on the curve where the direction of the tangent changes abruptly.
Vertical tangent point: Points where the derivative approaches infinity and the tangent is vertical.
Chain rule: A fundamental formula in calculus for finding the derivative of the composite of two functions.
Definitions
Derivative of a function at a point x0: The value f'(x0) of the limit f(x0+h) − f(x0)⁄h.
Derivative function: The function f'(x) that collects all the derivatives of f(x) at all points in the domain of f(x).
Differentiable function at a point: A function whose derivative at that point exists and is finite.
Second derivative: The derivative of the derivative of a function.
