What is Communication?
Communication is a process based on:
- Sender
- Message
- Channel
- Environment or context
- Body communication (verbal and non-verbal communication) and culture
- Receiver
Speaking about this phenomenon it appears evident who the culture can influence the process and the interpretation of that.
This is the reason why, analysing communication, we can notice the born of different genres.
The genre is a situation of communication or a literature typology of text.
An example can be the formal letter, which has a specific structure to follow (created by the different traditions).
How to write a formal letter?
- Addresses
- Date and place
- Start ("Dear", to who we are speaking)
- Body (content with the subject of the letter)
- Enclosure
- End (Kindness to maintain the relationship with customers)
- Signature
The formal letter will be part of texts we will translate to the exam, so it is useful to create a list of
Terms like "distinti saluti", "cordiali saluti", ...
The Communication structure:
Communication is not just speaking to a person, but it also includes the no-verbal language.
The most important parts of the process of communication are:
- Language (Italian, French, English, ...)
- Paralanguage (how you say something: in a sweet way, in a bored one, ...)
- Kinesics (how you move when you're speaking)
To speak in public and not to be nervous just relax breathing and visualizing what you love (an image about something you like). Then, when you're speaking look at the same person and change person just when you change part of speech, in order not to disturb the listeners! When we are in front of an audience will have to find a strategy to manage the stress, because there will be a very strong correlation between our body and our mind communication.
Conference as a communicative event:
The typologies of conference are different: corporate, academic, ...
scientific, medical or press conference typology. But the structure of it it's the same every time:
- Announcement/invitation/call for papers;
- Program;
- Spoken presentation with slides;
- Proceedings;
- Report.
During the events we will meet different person, with different roles participants.
What is a Call for paper? It is a document to introduce and propose the idea for the organization of a conference. This is what to prepare for the exam with the professional presentation (slides with power point).
What about the Program of it? It is a document that show how it is organised, in order to understand if it is an institutional, technical or specific conference (so that we can understand if we have to have more information to participate). Then the plane is divided in sections like the opening, the labouring presentation, a thematic session or the closing session.
What is a Handout? It's a printed copy of the conference program (in Italian 'stampati').
During the event it is already decided who will speak and he will speak knowing beforehand how long he has to speak (in general 10 minutes).
The floor to you (la parola a te)
What is a Verbanian report?
It is exactly the transcription of what has been said.
The press release communication (comunicato stampa):
It is a document, written before or after an event, to inform and promote an event, explaining where, what, who, and why about it.
It is important for the marketing of a product, but also for journalists to have a real knowledge about the event, and for the enterprise to control information from manipulations and fake news.
Press release structure:
- Logo of company or institution;
- Strong journalist headline;
- Concise lead with the most important information (imagine you are writing it to skip the rest of the text);
- Text (to support the main important information with quotes and reported speeches);
- Boilerplate institutional description.
hesitations.How translation works?To translate we start from a source (language, text, speaker) to join a specific target.It can be possible to do it on different level of knowledge of the language and the most important arethree:
- A) Native language (the language you know since you born);
- B) Active language (the one you can traduce to others);
- C) Passive language (the one you can just hear and understand, but not translate).
Translation is not the only process we can follow to pass from one language to another one, because it isalso possible to interpreting (for people who cannot hear or speak).Overall, it exists two different types of interpreting and translation:
- 1) Simultaneous;
- 2) Consecutive (divided in “short consecutive” and “classic consecutive”; in the second one you canwrite some notes during the process).
Important translation instruments:
- - Dictionary;
- - Parallel texts;
- - Glossary:
- - Terminological data banks;
- - Computer assisted translation (Google translator).
