What is Communication?
Communication is a process based on:
- Sender;
- Message;
- Channel;
- Environment or context;
- Body communication (verbal and non-verbal communication) and culture;
- Receiver.
Speaking about this phenomenon, it appears evident how culture can influence the process and the interpretation of that. This is the reason why, analyzing communication, we can notice the birth of different genres. The genre is a situation of communication or a literary typology of text. An example can be the formal letter, which has a specific structure to follow (created by the different traditions).
How to write a formal letter?
- Addresses;
- Date and place;
- Start (“Dear”, to whom we are speaking);
- Body (content with the subject of the letter);
- Enclosure;
- End (Kindness to maintain the relationship with customers);
- Signature!
The formal letter will be part of texts we will translate for the exam, so it is useful to create a list of terms like “distinti saluti”, “cordiali saluti”, ...
The Communication structure
Communication is not just speaking to a person, but it also includes non-verbal language. The most important parts of the process of communication are:
- Language (Italian, French, English, …)
- Paralanguage (how you say something: in a sweet way, in a bored one, …)
- Kinesics (how you move when you’re speaking)
To speak in public and not to be nervous, just relax by breathing and visualizing what you love (an image about something you like). Then, when you’re speaking, look at the same person and change person just when you change.
