The European Union(History)

1)In 1951,the EUROPEAN COOL AND STEEL COMMUNITY,is established between six European

countries:

1)Germany,

2)France,

3)Italy,

4)Belgium,

5)Netherlands,

6)Luxemburg,

It shares materials used in the manufacture of weapons and instruments of wars.

2)In 1957,the Treaty of Rome,is signed by Belgium ,France,Germany ,Italy,Luxemburg and the

Netherlands,creating the EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY.

3)In 1973,IRELAND and UK join the EEC.

4)In 1981,Greece joins the EEC.

6)In 1985,the Schengen Agreement signed on June 14,which progressively eliminates border controls

e facilitate the moviments for many European citizens.

7)In 1986,Spain and Portugal join the EEC.

8)In 1992,the Maasticht Treaty replaces the EEC with the European Union.

9)In 1995,Austria,Finland and Sweden join the EU.

10)In 1997, it is signed the Treaty of Amsterdam

11) IN 1999,the Euro becomes the currency of several countries: 1)Austria, 2)Belgium, 3)Finland,

4)France, 5)Germany, 6)Ireland, 7)Italy, 8)Luxembourg, 9)Netherlands, 10)Portugal.

12)In 2001,the Treaty of Nice is signed,facilitating EU enlargement.

13)In 2004, the countries of the ex USSR,join the EU.

14)In 2007,Bulgaria and Romania join the EU but not the Eurozone.

The Treaty of Lisbon , determined 50 articles for a Member State.

15)In 2013,Croatia joins the EU as twenty-eighth member but doesn’t take the euro as national

currency. EUROPEAN UNION INSTITUTIONS

THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

The legislative body of Union,with seals in Strasburg,Brussels and

Luxemburg,is directly elected by citizens of the EU every five years.

It is made up of 751 members of the European Parliament and a

President.

THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL

Its members are the Heads of state or governament of EU countries,the

European President,and the European Council President.

THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

It is responsible for coordinating countries,developing EU foreign

policy and relations with other countries.

Together with European Parliament,it approves the European

budget.

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

The European Commission is the executive body.

It is based in Brussels and elected every 5 years.

It is made up of 27 commissioners who act in the interests of the EU,and not of each country they

rapresent.

The President of the Commission(elected by the European Council) assigns tasks to each commissioner.
