Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is set in an immaginary place and focused more on passion, than on society then the novel is more Romantic.
Wuthering Heights has a complex plot, many characters and it is written using a particular way: with a symbolic meaning and with a new narrative tecnique, in fact there are two narrators: Mister Lockwood and Nelly Dean. There are also two locations: Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. The first one location is a big one house in the moor, so it is wild and quiet dark, instead the second is the typical victorian house. Furthermore the first is usually described in night time, instead the second is day time. In this novel nature is very important because influences the people that leave in a specific place. So there are two different types of people: the character is Wuthering Heights are passionate, irrational, violent, instead the people who live in Thrushcross Grange are civilized. These contrasts are at the base of the novel.
As I said Emily used two narrators, so two filters, two points of view: Mr Lockwood narrates the present instead Nelly Dean narrates the past by flashbacks, he goes back in time and knows everything about the story.
At the beginning of the story Mr. Lockwood was the owner of Thrushcross, but there were some problems so he went to Wuthering Heights, whose owner’s name is Heathcliff. (after this there’s a flashback because all the facts are already happened) Lockwood was forced to spend the night when a snowstorm hits. In the middle of the night, Lockwood is awakened by a ghostly child (gothic element) who calls herself Catherine Linton. After returning home, Lockwood talks to Nelly Dean, who knews everything.
So Nelly starts telling the story from the beginning he explains that in the two houses live two families: the Earnshaw lives in Wuthering Heights, instead the Linton lives in Thrushcross Grange. Mr. and mrs Earnshaw have two children: Catherine and Hindley. One day Mr. Earnshaw returning from a trip finds a orphan. The family decide to adopt the baby and to name him Heathcliff. Catherine and Heathcliff become fast friends, while Hindley, jealous of Mr. Earnshaw’s preference for his adopted son, abuses Heathcliff.
When Mr. Earnshaw died Hindley became the owner of Wuthering Heights, so he started treating Heathcliff as a servant, but Heathcliff has anyway a good relationship with Catherine, in fact they fall in love. But things change because Catherine becomes a woman, then she wants a social life. In fact Catherine decide with Heathcliff to see what people do in Thrushcross, where live Edgar and Isabel.
They see that Edgar and Isabel live in a different way and while there Catherine is attacked by the Lintons’dogs. Catherine can’t walk so she stay with the Lintons for several weeks. Then Catherine meets Edgar and she likes his life style. After a while Edgar asked her to marry him, she accepts but before Catherine explains to his nurse that she is going to accept the proposal because she knew that he can’t married Heathcliff, because he’s a servant even if she loves him. She prefers social convenience.
When Heathcliff hears that Catherine wants to marrie Edgar runs away before listening that she loves him. (The love beetween Heathcliff and Catherine is a rock, instead the love between Catherine and Edgar is mutable)
Heathcliff decide to go abroad to become a rich man. Later he returns to Thrushcross and married Isabel for revange. Now Catherine is pregnant, but during the childbirth she died. So Heathcliff is so sad.
