Jane Austen was born in Hampshire in 1775 and was educated at home by her father. She showed an early interest in literature and her main works are Sense and Sensation and pride and prejudice. After her father's death she moved to chawton, where she produced her mature works like Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion.
She died in 1817 and was buried in Winchester cathedral.

She mastered the novel of manners, which will be very famous during the Victorian age, and based on ordinary events of gentry, analyzing the character's psychology and manners to move towards a moral reflection.
In her works we can find an omniscient narrator and dialogues are very common in her novels.

Features

Her works are set in upper and middle class society and the characters are influenced by the social distinctions.
The most important themes treated in the novels are love, friendship and marriage, seen from many perspectives: the result of real love, physical attraction and a moving society.

The plot

Pride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy dealing with themes such as love and marriage. It is set in Longbourn, where the Bennets live with their five young daughters, who ought to find a husband. When a rich man named Bingley moves nearby and the two families encounter at a ball: Bingley likes Jane and Mr Darcy, a dear friend of his, starts to feel attracted by Elizabeth, but she refuses his proposal because of his pride and accuses him of splitting Bingley and her sister. Eventually she changes her mind about him and they get married.

Themes

The main themes are various: the author underlines the journey of the characters to knowledge and self awareness and the relationship between the individual and society. Marriage is perceived as a way to gain independence.

The protagonists

The main characters are Darcy and Elizabeth, whose good qualities and weaknesses are both treated in the story: even though she is accused of being too proud, she is also prejudiced about changing her mind about Darcy, and he is prejudiced about her family, which he deems inferior.
The two characters will eventually be able to live together only if they gradually change their temper.
