  • Metaphors compare unlike things without "as" or "like", offering a stronger emotional impact than similes.

  • Symbols and allegories use objects or stories to represent broader qualities or ideas, enriching the poem's depth.

Language devices

A poem conveys its meaning through words chosen by the poet and arranged by images, not only on the basis of the definition of the words, but on the basis of the feelings they evoke in the mind of the reader. The type of vocabulary or syntax used in a poem define the tone, which manages to create certain atmospheres and evoke particular moods. The tone can be: happy, sad, calm, melancholic. The poet can use different language devices to communicate abstract concepts as if they were concrete images.
Simile: an expression comparing one thing with another, always including the words "as" or "like". The functions of a simile are:
- give more vividness to the scene;
- simplify the meaning of what you want to express;
- to introduce an element of surprise;
- to create a certain emotion in the reader.
Ex: from fear he turned white as snow
Metaphor: can be confused with the simile, but this is the comparison between two things that are not similar without the connectives “like” or “as”. The elements of a metaphor are: the tenor (the subject), the vehicle (the object, so what the subject is compared to). Then there is the common ground, that share tenor and vehicle. The metaphor has more or less the same functions of the simile, but the metaphor has a stronger emotional impact.
Personification: the act of giving a human quality or characteristic to something which is not human, to animals or abstract thing.
Symbol: is a person, place or action that is used to represent a quality or idea.
Ex: the rose is the symbol of love; the dove the peace.
Allegory: this combines a large number of symbols, very often a story.
Oxymoron: two words used together that have, or seem to have, opposite meanings. It’s used to express extreme feelings
Hyperbole: it means exaggeration of a quantity or a quality.
