Concetti Chiave

Types of Adjectives

1. di qualità (quality): square, good, golden, clever, heavy, etc;

2. dimostrativi (dimostrative):

- this: questo/questa;

- these: questi/queste;

- that: quello/quella;

- those: quelli/quelle.

3. Distibutivi (distributives): each, every, either, neither;

4. interrogativi (interrogatives): which? What? Whose? Etc;

5. possessivi (possessive): my, yours, etc.

Invariability of Adjectives

Function of Adjectives

Gli aggettivi dimostrativi (this, that, etc.) e gli aggettivi qualificativi (much, little, etc) sono irregolari e gli unici ad avere una forma singolare e plurale, rispettivamente this, those - many e few.

this cat - these cats;

that cat - those cats.

In questo caso sono occupati dai verbi qualitativi to be, to seem, to appear, to look, to feel.

Esempio: It is a lovely day (attributiva);

The day is lovely (predicativa);

I'm reading an interesting book (predicativa);

They are English but they look Italian (predicativa).

Esempio: a fridge full of food and drinks (a fredge which is full of food and drinks)

2. Con le espressioni di misura.

Esempio: I'm sixteen years old.

The Thames is 338 km long.

Esempio: there are more blacks than whites in Haiti.

2. quando indicano un'intera classe di persone come the young, the old, the poor, the unployed, etc.

Esempio: the number of unemployed is increasing.

3. Quando designano concetti astratti come the beautiful, the good, the evil, etc.

Esempio: "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" by Sergio Leone.

Order of Adjectives

1. Possessivi;

2. numerali;

3. qualità astratte;

4. dimensione, forma e misura;

5. età;

6. colore;

7. nazionalità, origine;

8. materia;

9. funzioni;

10. nome.

Esempio: Our first lovely big old brown American wooden radio set.
