America’s Isolationism

The term “Isolationism” refers to America’s longstanding reluctance to become involved in European alliances and wars.

This position was present even before the American Civil War (1776); but it was “officially” declared only with the 1st USA president, George Washington, and with the 3rd, Thomas Jefferson, who said “peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none”.

These speeches were only giving a definition to the term Isolationism, because the real word was born with James Monroe, in 1823.

This kind of strategy, which imposed tariffs and quotas on foreign products, was also useful in order to protect internal production from European goods.

The reluctance of external conflicts and wars lasts until the beginning of the Cold War, when the USA noticed that they wouldn’t be able to keep an isolated position from others.

Previously they only decided to join wars when they had a real attack by someone; for example, during the 2nd World War, Pearl Harbour was attacked by Japan, and during the 1st, Germany destroyed an American ship.

Il tostapane

Il tostapane fu inventato nel 1919 da Charles Strite.
