“Every man lies, but give him a mask and he will be sincere”.

Oscar Wilde.

He was the major spokesman for the Aesthetic movement in the late 19th century and an advocate of “Art for art’s sake”, which proposes that beauty has no utilitarian value and is independent of morality.

He studied at Oxford where he lived as a dandy that was the image of an eccentric man who gave importance to the way in which a man appeared and for this reason he was both criticized and admired.

This figure was based on his belief that in life, as in art, the artist’s duty was to cultivate beauty and give aesthetic pleasure.

The plot

John Worthing, the protagonist, even known as Jack, is an orphan who was found by a really rich man.

He became a successful businessman and he is currently the guardian of his stepfather’s granddaughter, Miss Cecily Cardew.

He has a big house in the country where he lives with Cecily and a lot of domestics.

He originally invented his brother Ernest because he wanted to be free to go in the city as often as he liked so he could evade from reality.

As Ernest, Jack is in love with Gwendolen Moncrief, the cousin of Algernon another idle man (and Ernest friend) who, in turn, has invented an invalid friend, Bumbury, as an excuse to evade his duties in London.

When Jack proposes to Gwendolen, Lady Bracknell, her mother, forbids the marriage on the grounds that Jack is a foundling.

Meanwhile, Algernon discovers that Ernest is Jack and also that he has a ward, Cecily.

Under the name of Ernest, he goes to Jack’s country house to meet her.

The two immediately fall in love.

Cecily found him irresistible because his name Ernest.

They are soon joined by Gwendolen, then by Jack, and finally by Lady Bracknell.

There follow a series of comic misunderstandings and extraordinary coincidences.

In the end Jack (who was left in a hang-bag at Victoria Station by his absent-minded governess), discovers that he is Algernon’s brother, and that his name is Ernest as he always pretended.
