Inglese: The Great Exhibition

The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park in London in 1851.

It was the first in a series of exhibitions of culture and industry that were to become popular in the 19th-century. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time, including Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens.

The Great Exhibition was organized by Prince Albert, husband of the monarch Queen Victoria and other members of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce as a celebration of modern industrial technology and design.

Although the Great Exhibition was a platform on which countries from around the world could display their achievements, Great Britain sought to prove its own superiority.

A special building, nicknamed The Crystal Palace, was built to house the exhibition. The Palace was an iron and glass building originally erected in Hyde Park. It was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton.

It is called “Crystal Palace” because, during the construction, they used the invention of the cast plate glass method, which allowed for large, cheap and strong sheets of glass.

This building surprised visitors with its clear walls. Paxton’s ideas reflected his practical brilliance as a designer and problem-solver. He introduced many innovations, offered practical advantages.

Paxton was acclaimed in every part of the world for his project. In 1936 the Palace was destroyed by fire.

The Great Exhibition is a symbol of the Victorian Age. This was a long period of peace, prosperity and national self-confidence for Britain.

Victorian architecture is a series of revival styles in the period of the reign of Queen Victoria. The styles often included interpretations of historic styles mixed with the introduction of Asian influences.

The emergence of photography, presented at the Great Exhibition, resulted in significant changes in Victorian art: for example, Queen Victoria was the first British monarch to be photographed.
